 We had a great picnic last month.  Good food and good friends.  I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did.  The weather was beautiful – it was a GOOD day!!

Next VOICE Meeting:

 For our May meeting we will be privileged to hear from Mary Hartle-Smith, from the Maricopa Association of Governments, a regional transportation planning agency.  She will be giving us an update on what is going on transportation wise for bus, light rail, and Dial a Ride.  It’s been quite a while since we have had any updates on this.

 Save the Date:

• May 10-12 – Day on the Lake
• June 20 – VOICE goes to a D-Backs game

Thought for the Month

 School is out or almost out for all of the kiddos for the year.  What excitement!  That means summer is just around the corner (and I mean the hot weather).  It’s that time again to make sure that you stay well hydrated, wear sunscreen and/or a hat, stay out of the hot mid-day sun and just take care of yourself.

 Our March meeting was a great meeting.  Christina Eng brought information about the current adaptive equipment for home, including aids for bathing, toileting, dressing, etc.  Christina is very knowledgeable. One of the things that she stressed is with summer about to appear she warned all of us of our personal space and hygiene – making sure that we take showers and change clothes after we have been out in the heat – we don’t want to offend anyone.  Thanks, Christina, for all of the good information.

 Next VOICE Meeting:

 Our April meeting will be our annual picnic at Saguaro Ranch Park.  VOICE will provide hamburgers and hot dogs with all of the fixings as well as drinks.  Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.  We hope to see ALL OF YOU at the picnic.

 Happy April!

 April is a beautiful month – it makes me think of spring flowers and new life.  Spring into action and do something that you enjoy.

 We watched a good movie last month – hope everyone else enjoyed it too.  It was “Dolphin Tale”, a movie based on a true story about a dolphin that got caught in a crab trap and lost her tail.  It was a story about love and determination.

Next VOICE Meeting:

At our March meeting we will be privileged to have Christina Eng come and talk to us about independence with self care, possibly bringing some new adaptive equipment and aids for bathing, toileting, and general hygiene. If there is time left she might talk about infection control and anything else that you might be interested in.  I’m sure she will leave time at the end of questions and answers.

Because she will have lots of information, let’s all be mindful of others and leave our questions for the end of her time.  We don’t want to interrupt her or talk over her so that others can’t hear or understand what she is saying. Thank you.

Happy Awareness Month!

This month is full of many health awareness days or even months, including:

• Diabetes Alert Day
• National Kidney Month
• National MS Education Month
• National Nutrition Month

The list goes on and on.  What this tells me is that March is the month to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves, our health, our nutrition, etc.

Let’s make this the year of “I CAN”, “I WILL”, and “I DID”.

Thanks to Teri Canady for sharing information about the ADA and when she was in Colorado and also when she went to Washington, D.C.  Teri was very brave and gutsy – don’t you think – getting herself arrested.  She did a lot to help the ADA become a reality.  Way to go Teri!!

Also, thanks to Joyce Weber from Happy Tails for being there with a couple of her consumers and their beautiful dogs.  Joyce was able to explain a lot about service dogs, her company, and the rules surrounding service dogs.  Thanks for this information.

 Next VOICE Meeting:

 At our February meeting we will be watching a movie.  It is movie and treats month!!  We decided that we will watch “Dolphin Tale”.  It is based on a true story about a young dolphin who gets caught in a crab trap and damages her tail. I think it looks like a great movie and I know that I am excited to watch it.  It should be very inspiring.
